Initially after the Second World War, the Faculty of Physical Sciences was common for the Polytechnic and the Wroclaw University, and located at the Polytechnic. So it was until 1956, when the then Institute of Physics moved to the premises at Cybulskiego street, near to current location. For years, the library was short of space and professional supervision, and run by young physicists. It was only in 1968, when a professional librarian was hired and introduced into the library. Meanwhile, shortcomings still prevailed. In lack of shelf space, books of second rank were often deposited in one of departmental libraries, or even discarded. Compared to other libraries, the users had the most troubled access to collections. Improvements started to occur around 1990. Within a year, the newly appointed librarian, Mrs. Zofia Rek, was able to concentrate and unify dispersed collections, to open a reading room, to arrange rooms for Russian serials, for English serials, and for materials of low circulation. Then, in 1994, a decision was taken by the University to expand the premises of the Institutes of Physics; part of this plan was a new site for the Library. The construction process was concluded in 1999. Shortly after the relocation of the Library in the autumn of this year, its new modern reading room started gaining popularity among student users, not only of physics, but affiliated to other Departments, too. Expanding indicators of use posed new challenges for the librarian and the personnel; recently, remotely accessible catalog of monographs has been launched, in order to facilitate access to the Library.
